This thread will provide you with the guidance on how to get the most out of our forum server.
1. Registration
If you want to participate in any of our forums or wish to request creation of a new forum, you need to register yourself with our forum server. Registration process is quick and will provide you with a full access to all forums hosted by Timur.Com. Just click on the Register link located on the top menu bar of the forum window. System will ask you to provide desired user name and password that you would use to access our forums. You will also be able to provide some additional information about yourself.
2. New Forum Creation
There are two ways to create new forum on Timur.Com:
Method 1 : Thought through and self organized.
All forums are organized by categories. If you want to create a new forum, first select an appropriate category / parent forum where your new forum should be placed. Then you need to click Request New Forum Creation link located on the parent forum page.
You will need to provide new forum title, short description and introductory text. You will also need to select type, style and access parameters for the forum that you want to create. You can also provide some comments about your forum in the Comments box. Your comments will help system administrator or parent forum moderator to approve your new forum.
Forum Title is the main reference to your forum that visitors will see. Forum title should be short, and clearly define what this forum is about.
Forum Description is a text that is shown under the forum title. Here you can provide more detailed information about your forum.
Introduction Text is general information about your forum that is going to be show to users when they open your forum.
Forum Type defines behavior of the forum. There are three forum types offered by Timur.Com:
- Forums&Threads : This type allows to have threads on the top level of the forum as well as sub-forums of any type. This is very general type of a forum and may look messy at times.
- Threads only : This type allows to have only threads. No sub-forums are allowed. Use it as a final branch in your forum tree.
- Forums Only : This type represents Category type of forum. You cannot have any discussion threads directly on this forum but can create any type of sub-forums.
Forum Style defines how forum presents itself. There are three forum types offered by Timur.Com:
- Regular Forum : This is a default style. Users can directly switch to and from this forum by navigating main forum tree.
- Root Style Forum : Forum behaves like a root of the forum tree. Once user switches to this forum, only sub-forums are directly accessible. Parent forum is not visible.
- System Forum : Forum managed by TIMUR.COM administration.
Forum Access defines how forum allows access to it`s data. There are three forum types offered by Timur.Com:
- Public Forum : Default access level. Everybody can see and participate in this forum.
- Private Forum : Only users, who have requested access and have been granted the privilege, can see posts and participate in this forum. This forum cannot be indexed by the search engines. Use only when very private discussions are needed.
- System Forum : Forum access managed by TIMUR.COM administration.
After you submit your request, it will be reviewed by the system administrator or by the moderator of the parent forum. Once your forum is approved, you will become the moderator of this newly created forum. This means that you will have full control over the new forum. You will be able to edit forum title, forum description, introduction text and forum type. You will also be able to edit or delete messages posted on your forum by other users, if you consider them to be inappropriate. As the moderator of the forum you will have rights to create sub-forums under your main forum without waiting for approval from anybody. You will also be able to receive for approval or denial requests from other users who would want to create new forums with your forum as a parent.
Method 2 : Quick and dirty.
Timur.Com has a special forum called CREATE YOUR FORUM NOW! This is the only place where any registered user can immediately create new forum without waiting for approval from anybody. Our team members will later move your new forum to the appropriate forum tree branch, and will notify you about its new location. All the rules and definitions described in the Method 1 are still applicable here. Timur.Com reserves the right to delete without notification any new forum created in this location if last one is found to be offensive or inappropriate.
To create new forum using this method just open CREATE YOUR FORUM NOW! forum and follow Create New Forum Now! Link.
After you create your new forum using this method, please logout and re-login back to TIMUR.COM. This will update your access privileges and give you moderator’s rights over your newly created discussion forum.
3. Avatars
After you register yourself with TIMUR.COM, you can pick avatar (visual representation) for yourself. To do this, you need to select User Information on the main menu bar. There you will see information that you have provided during registration. In addition to that you will see option Current Avatar that will show Select Avatar link. There you will be able to select image that you like or upload desired avatar image and then select it from the list. From the moment you upload your image it becomes available to other users. Please do not upload huge images directly from your digital camera!!!! Maximum image size is 130x130 pixels. If width or height of your image is more than 130 pixels, server will not take your avatar.
4. Assigning Other Moderators
Sometimes it is necessary to delegate your moderator’s authority to other users in the system. This action will not remove your rights, but will create another moderator for the current forum. To assign new moderator, go to the thread where user, that you want to promote, left a message. On the left side of that message you will see a small red arrow pointing up  . It is located under user name and next to the `Status: User` marker. Click on that arrow. System will ask you if you want to promote this user. Click OK. System will tell you that you will not be able to revert this action, and will ask you to confirm your request. Click OK. Page will reload and you will see that this user has been promoted. Remember, that to remove moderator`s rights from that user you will need to contact TIMUR.COM support. Newly created moderator will have moderator`s rights in the forum where he/she has been assigned and in all forums laying under that forum.
5. Forum Logo
After you register your forum with TIMUR.COM, you can upload custom forum logo image. This logo will replace default TIMUR.COM logo that appears at the top of the page. To do this, you need to click Edit Forum button/link. There you will see Forum Logo Image section with (Change Logo) option. If you follow this option/ link, you will see screen where you can upload your image and provide short text that will be displayed while mouse pointer is suspended above your logo. Mandatory image size is 300x40 pixels, otherwise server will not take your logo. Image must be in GIF or JPG format.
